This class is for anyone who's never picked up a pen. We teach the basics, and our hope is you leave with ink flowing through your nib and the confidence to keep practicing. Tried it before? It's a great refresher with new supplies from our beginner kit.
Left-handed? You're very welcome. This class is designed with lefties in mind — we teach you to get ink flowing through your nib with confidence, whatever hand you use.
All students under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a ticketed adult to our classes.
PLEASE NOTE: Some of our classes are held at 21+ establishments, so please read the class description before purchasing.
We recommend arriving 5-10 minutes before the start time to settle in. Seating is first come, first served within the venue.

Hi there! I’m Melanie, a calligrapher based in Metro Detroit. I’ve been doodling “fancy letters” since I was a kid and have always loved the beauty of the handwritten word. I began learning calligraphy in earnest in 2019 when I took my first pointed pen class, and I was hooked! At the end of 2020 I was diagnosed with cancer and had to put my pens down to focus on my health. Once in remission, I came back to calligraphy in 2022 as a way to rebuild my hand strength and coordination and it’s been such a help! Since then, I’ve also been learning new calligraphy styles, engraving and woodburning. I’ve been fortunate enough to be commissioned for event signage, invitation lettering and ornament engraving. When I’m not playing with pens and ink, you’ll find me knitting socks (because who doesn’t love cozy toes?), or spending time with my family.
